Go to the Dentist and Save Your Marriage Part 2 of a 2 part series

Sleep apnea is more prevalent than diabetes or asthma. In addition to snoring and tiredness, sleep apnea can result in high blood pressure, stroke, heartburn, impotence, poor job performance, and low libido among other things. People with untreated sleep apnea had a 37% chance of dying within 8 years. This same study reveals mortality drops to 4% for people who have their sleep apnea treated. It is believed that Reggie White, Frank Cornish, John Candy, Jerry Garcia, and most likely Tim Russert, all died as a result of complications related to underlying sleep apnea. In some of these gentlemen, the sleep apnea was undiagnosed. Obesity and genetics are strongly associated with sleep breathing disorders.

So what do you do about it? You can go to a sleep doctor who will perform a polysomnogram, i.e., a sleep study, to determine if you have sleep apnea and, if so, the severity of it. Severe sleep apneanics are offered treatment with the GOLD standard of treatment, a CPAP machine. But those folks who aren’t severe enough, can’t tolerate a CPAP, or just snore, can benefit from a mandibular advancement device (MAD) fabricated by a dentist.

There are many different types of MADs available - you can discuss options with a properly trained dentist to find the best appliance that provides you the most comfort. The dentist may need to adjust the appliance for best results. Yearly follow-up appointments are imperative once your MAD is properly fitted and titrated to make sure it is still working for you. Some insurance (medical and/or dental) may pay for these devices but that is not always the case. But think about it… what are your life and marriage worth?

So, stop snoring, get some Z’s, get healthier and move back into the same bedroom. Save your marriage - save your life!
